HOW TO APPLY TO FCA - Online Application

Please fill out the online application below to enroll in FCA.
Once your application is submitted, it will be reviewed by FCA.
You will be notified by email of your acceptance into the academy within 5 business days.
Once accepted into FCA, you will be emailed a checklist to help you complete your enrollment.
*Late or mid-semester enrollments will be considered on an individual basis
depending on need and availability. Late fees may apply.

PLEASE NOTE:

At FCA, teachers are referred to as Mentors and students are referred to as Scholars.
All FCA Scholars are between the ages of 12-18 years old. Students must be 12 years old by August 19 in order to enroll.

Cancellations

If a registered family or Scholar leaves the Academy within the designated two-week period,
monies – less any expenses incurred, will be refunded. After the two-week period, no refund
will be given. Cancellations requested after the class begins will be refunded directly from
the Mentor in charge of the class.

Families are required to notify each class’s Mentor of all planned and unplanned absences.

Scholars need to be in their scheduled class. If a scholar has a gap in their scedule, the parent must contact the chairman.

Fire Canyon Academy will not be responsible for a Scholar who leaves the premises
without permission.
When school ends for the day, Scholars are expected to help clean up and follow
through with their responsibilities.
Families are required to pick up their Scholars promptly and will not be allowed to
loiter after classes have ended.

FIRE CANYON ACADEMY SCHOLAR, PARENT, AND MENTOR CONTRACT

(To be signed by scholars, parents, and mentors each year.)

As Parents, Scholars, and Mentors of Fire Canyon Academy, it is expected that we exhibit certain qualities in character. In signing this contract, we commit to following the standards stated here.

As a LEMI project school, Fire Canyon Scholars are encouraged to discover their personal mission and grow into strong leaders. Each person’s mission will look different and we want to always be respectful of others' differences and uniqueness. We strive to speak with mutual respect in conversation and debate and to respect personal boundaries, we present ourselves in dress and appearance with our divine identity in mind, and we show gratitude for the facilities and resources we get to utilize in our educational pursuits. We know that Fire Canyon Academy is a school and we are here to learn: public displays of affection, violence, and abuse will not be tolerated. Parents, scholars, and mentors strengthen our sense of community by willingly participating in making Fire Canyon Academy an edifying and nurturing atmosphere.

LANGUAGE: At Fire Canyon Academy, we understand the power of words. We always strive to speak kindly and positively about others. Insulting, putting down or gossiping is not part of our culture. Profanity, vulgarity or crude language of any kind is not permitted. We encourage sensitive issues to be handled face to face in a dignified manner and also welcome reaching out to the board if help is needed. We can all do our part to keep the atmosphere at FCA uplifting, welcoming and positive.

APPEARANCE AND DRESS STANDARDS: Appearance sends a strong message about who we are. Here at Fire Canyon, Mentors and Scholars are expected to dress respectfully and modestly. This means considering personal hygiene such as brushing hair and teeth and wearing deodorant, etc. This also looks like choosing to wear things that do not distract or draw undue attention. Heavenly Father wants us to remember who we really are: His beloved children with a divine nature and eternal destiny. Our body is a sacred gift from Him and we get to honor God in how we care for it and dress it.

FCA Dress Code: Scholars and Mentors are expected to wear clothing that covers their body including chest, back, shoulders, and thighs. Clothing should also cover undergarments. Short shorts or skirts, low cut shirts - including chest or back, belly shirts, tank tops, overly tight or overly loose clothing, sheer or revealing clothing, and clothing with inappropriate images or words are not permitted.

RESPECT FOR THE FACILITIES: As homeschoolers, we have the unique challenge of finding a solid location to meet at. We are so grateful and blessed to have found the UofU building to meet at. Each Scholar and Mentor’s behavior reflects back on Fire Canyon Academy and the homeschool community as a whole. We want to always treat the facilities we meet in with care; this means cleaning up after ourselves and refraining from vandalization, or behaviors that will cause extra wear and tear to the furniture and structure. As Leaders, Mentors, Parents, and Scholars, it is expected that all will contribute to the cleanliness and care of the building and any other area visited during school time. This is extremely important as any infraction may cause us to lose the opportunity to meet in the UofU building.

PARENTS commit to volunteering on a committee a minimum of 20 hours a semester at FCA, even if the scholar is only taking one class. Please check-in with our Parent Rep to make sure your volunteer position is squared away. Parents are responsible for class and registration fees and cost of supplies as well as pick-up and drop-off of scholars. Registration and Class fees are due by August 1st. Block 1 begins at 8:45 and Block 3 ends at 2:30. FCA members must arrive no sooner than 8:25 am and leave no later than 2:45 pm. Parents have also been asked by the UofU Staff to please not hang around at the building unless absolutely necessary. *All Parents visiting the building MUST check-in at the main office and give Julie at the front desk your name, your scholar’s name and the code word: LIGHT. Parents are encouraged not to enter the building at pickup and arrange a plan with scholars for where to meet outside.

Parents are required to attend the Annual parent meeting and are encouraged to attend awards nights, family gatherings and parent nights out activities. We know that the greatest learning happens in the home and we support and appreciate all parents in their endeavor to give scholars the very best education for them!

SCHOLARS commit to arriving on-time to class each day and avoiding mingling and visiting in-between classes. Visiting should be reserved for lunch time. Scholars must not be in the building if they do not have a class at that time - unless special permission is acquired by the board. And friends or youth not enrolled at FCA aren’t allowed to be in the building during FCA school hours. Scholars have also been asked by the UofU staff to use the side staircases as much as possible and to please avoid the main staircase and also avoid congregating in the downstairs foyer area.

FCA Scholars are expected to be attentive in class and to avoid distractions such as phones, earbuds, toys, food, etc. Scholars will be able to enjoy class and grow in knowledge more as they come to class ready to engage in discussion and activities with a positive and willing attitude. Scholars should always feel safe and comfortable in our community. If you see any behaviors from scholars or adults that seem inappropriate or unsafe, etc. please report to your parent(s), trusted adult, and a board member to address the situation. We applaud our scholars for their great effort and dedication to their own education and learning!

MENTORS have the great responsibility and privilege of teaching our scholars. Mentors commit to preparing thoughtful lessons and showing up on time to mentor the scholars each week. Mentors strive to communicate well with scholars and parents and to participate in mutual respect and adherence to FCA policies. Mentors must leave classrooms looking like they found them and are encouraged to enlist the help of scholars for any cleanup. Mentors are parent volunteers and we acknowledge the incredible commitment it is to volunteer in this way!

It is expected that participating members of the Academy will exhibit the highest of character and the Conduct Contract should be followed at all times. In the event that disciplinary action is required for a Scholar, the protocol will be as follows:

1. The mentor/parent/board member will reach out to the scholar and parent to resolve the issue.

2. If the issue persists, the parents, mentor and chairman will meet to discuss the scholar’s behavior and the best way to handle the situation.

3. If the behavior problems persist, the scholar may be asked by the board to withdraw. Re-admittance to the academy will be determined by the board, mentor(s) and parents.

FIRE CANYON HOLD HARMLESS AGREEMENT

I understand that participation in Fire Canyon Academy and activities involves a certain degree of risk that could result in injury or death. In consideration of the benefits to be derived, after carefully considering the risk involved, and in view of the fact that the Fire Canyon Academy is a non-profit organization in which membership is voluntary, I have carefully considered the risk involved and have given consent for myself (or my son or daughter as listed on Fire Canyon’s Registration Form) to participate in the activity, and waive all claims I or we may have against the Fire Canyon Academy, the FCA Board, the activity coordinators, and all volunteers, and or related parties, or other organizations associated with any activity. I am not under the influence of any chemical substance, including alcohol. I understand that any physical activity involves a risk of injury. I understand that my participation (or my allowing the participation of my son or daughter as listed on Fire Canyon’s Registration Form) in the activity is entirely voluntary. I release Fire Canyon Academy, the FCA Board, the activity coordinators, and all the volunteers, or any related parties or other organizations associated with the activity from any and all claims or liability arising out of this participation. This release does not, however, apply to any harm caused by negligence or willful misconduct of the FCA Board, or its volunteers and the organizers of any event including regular school days. In case of an emergency involving my child, I understand every effort will be made to contact me as stated on the Fire Canyon Academy Registration Form. In the event I cannot be reached, I hereby give my permission to the physician selected by the adult leader in charge to secure proper treatment, including hospitalization, anesthesia, surgery, or injections of medication for my child.

23. FCA is a Christian based community that encourages students and families to pray, seek to strengthen their relationship with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Study in your core value books (Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, Tora, ect.) and discussion of spiritual experiences may be encouraged in many of the classes offered here. I understand.
